Particulate matter air pollution caused 3.5 million premature deaths and years of disability from cardio-vascular ailments in 2019, up from 26 million in 1990, according to a worldwide analysis of data from 204 countries published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. The age-standardised premature death rate fell by 36.7% between 1990 and 2019, although those with cardiovascular disability resisted the reduction.
